Online Utility Application - Payment Program, 2022

Cloud Science Labs assisted a state-funded relief program, helping in the efficient processing of $647 million in debt relief for 1.4 million customers statewide.

The Challenge:

History:

The client, Community Service and Department (CSD) designed the Payment Program, an energy utility relief project, to relieve COVID-19 utility debt for residential customers. 

However, they faced challenges processing vast amounts of data, with over 1.4 million customers and $647 million in debt relief. To enhance their systems, they adopted MuleSoft, Salesforce, Snowflake, Okta, and Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS) as a part of digital transformation.

In 2022, additional funding from the State Budget Act required the rapid configuration of their Salesforce solution and business processes to meet the new requirements.

The major challenge faced by our client was:

  1. To handle an enormous volume of data, with over 1.4 million customers statewide and $647 million in energy utility debt relief.

  2. To provide rapid configuration of their existing Salesforce solution, and to provide innovative IT solutions within the restricted time frame.

The Solution:

Cloud Science Labs stepped in as a trusted partner for IT transformation and implemented enhanced solutions for the client.

Enhancement of the Online Utility Application:

  1. This implementation enhanced the Salesforce system with the latest features for data exchange, processing, sharing, error handling, and notifications to process an enlarged amount of data. 

  2. Leveraged the Salesforce platform cloud, Mulesoft, and Snowflake to scale the state's Application Payment Program. This enabled the state department to handle more customers seeking energy utility debt relief.

The 2022, Payment program, project solution included the following key features:

Online Application Form:

Cloud Science Labs implemented an online application form in their portal, allowing utilities to request funding.

Data Upload:

Qualified utility data was uploaded into Snowflake using Microsoft Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS).

Data Processing:

Data extraction from Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS) and additional processing conducted through validated data implemented with Snowflake pipes.

Data Transfers:

Aggregated data transfers from Snowflake to the Salesforce database were executed through scheduled batches implemented using MuleSoft.

Reporting:

Reports and dashboards were created in Salesforce to analyze data for utilities in the system.

Customer Portal:

A customer-facing online portal using Salesforce Experience Cloud enabled the submission of program applications and closeout report data.


Project Benefits:

The implementation of the program 2022 solutions had a significant impact statewide. This benefitted residential energy customers throughout the state.

  1. The re-designed data models enable viewing information separately and reporting data related to the 2022 program applications and closeout phases. 

  2. With the newly implemented 2022 solution, residential energy customers across the state received much-needed assistance.

  3. Program 2022 solution delivers a system that is furthermore user-friendly and convenient.
